EZ-RIDER - Chain & Sprockets Removal

A Panoply of Challenges

After I decided to remove the sprocket from the rear wheel, it was only natural that I would want to remove the front sprocket and the chain.  Here's some of the things that I found out along the way:

Chain

The VT250CR chain is pretty high-tech.  It's a size that's designed for a nice balance between weight and power, and it features some advanced technology to make it long-lasting.  The VT250CR has a 520 type chain, which means:

- There is a 5/8 of an inch gap between the side plates, to accomodate at fairly thick front and rear sprocket

- The teeth of the sprockets are 1/4 of an inch wide, so the gaps between the rivets on the chain are also 1/4 of an inch from pin-to-pin

- The VT250CR chain features o-rings between the side plates and the rollers, which helps to reduce wear and increase the life of the chain

Small Sprocket

The small sprocket is also fairly high-tech, and it connects directly to the engine of the VT250CR and it has the following characteristics: 

- It is stamped 14T, which means it has fourteen teeth
- It is rubber sided, to reduce rattle & vibration
- It uses a very large diameter washer
- It features  14mm bolt @ 40lbs

Large Sprocket

The large sprocket is a piece of stamped metal with the following characteristics:

- It has a 80mm center hole
- It is stamped 38T, which means it has thirty-eight teeth
- It is secured by 5 Bolts spaced at 64mm

This means that the VT250cR has 14:38 (7:19) gearing.

Eeeek! Wasp Nests In My Motorcycle!

This video started off normally enough. I wanted to get the sprocket cover off of EZ-Rider so I could start to make an attempt to service the chain. It should have taken just a couple of minutes and a 5mm hex key... But, as with everything related to EZ-RIDER, it got complicated FAST! Someone had mounted an air horn on the bike at one point in its past, and the mount proved to be the trickiest part of this little project, because the nut that they had used as a spacer had me completely fooled. I thought it was a legitimate nut, and kept turning and turning it - with nothing to show. Eventually, the penny dropped and I figured that the nut was just there as a spacer, so I got a pair of pliers out and turned the VERY STRANGE bolt out of the sprocket cover - after struggling with getting the air horn out of the way! The air horn deserves a complete video of its own. It's ridiculously long and BENT in a curve, AND has a scallop taken out of it to fit beside the frame! Wow! Whoever put that in had a good time! I *love* it! I will do everything I can to make sure it goes back into service, but perhaps in a slightly more MMTM approved way! Once I got the sprocket cover off of EZ-RIDER, I discovered a broken lens inside of it from...a car taillight? I dunno - the lens is RED, so I wonder what part of what vehicle got in there, and HOW it got in there? Last, but certainly not least, I discovered a bunch of MUD WASP nests inside the cover. Thankfully, the nexts were empty and I didn't have to contend with any angry wasps! But their nests were still there!
